What diseases are caused by HPV?

HPV is known to cause:

Almost 100% of cervical cancers1

Over 90% of genital warts in men and women2

88% of anal cancers in men and women1

78% of vaginal cancers in women1

25% of vulvar cancers in women1

Which HPV types can cause severe diseases?

There are over 150 types of HPV. Most low-risk HPV types don’t cause diseases, except for HPV types 6 and 11 which account for 90% of genital warts.3

High-risk HPV types are the ones that cause cancer. There are approximately 14 high-risk HPV types, including HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66 and 68.3 HPV types 16 and 18 cause 50% and 20% of cervical cancer cases respectively.1

All HPV vaccines protect against types 16 and 18.3 The bivalent vaccine protects against HPV types 16 and 18. The quadrivalent vaccine protects against types 16, 18, 6 and 11. However, only the 9-valent vaccine provides broader protection against 9 HPV types, including high-risk strains such as types 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58, which are responsible for 94% of cervical cancers, as well as low-risk strains like types 6 and 11 that can cause genital warts.3,4
