What diseases are caused by HPV?

HPV is known to cause:

~100% of cervical cancers1

~90% of genital warts in men and women2

~88% of anal cancers in men and women1

~78% of vaginal cancers in women1

~25% of vulvar cancers in women1

Which HPV types can cause severe diseases?

There are over 150 types of HPV. Most low-risk HPV types don’t cause diseases, except for HPV types 6 and 11 which account for about 90% of genital warts.3

High-risk HPV types are the ones that can cause cancer. There are approximately 12 high-risk HPV types, including HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58 and 59.3 HPV types 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases.1

All HPV vaccines contains types 16 and 18.3 The bivalent vaccine contains HPV types 16 and 18. The quadrivalent vaccine contains types 16, 18, 6 and 11. However, only the 9-valent vaccine contains 9 HPV types, including high-risk strains such as types 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58.3,4

For most people, HPV clears on its own. But for those who don’t clear the virus, it can cause certain cancers and diseases.
